Setesdalsbanen narrow gauge railway. Run-round footplate ride.
The Setesdalsbanen narrow gauge railway is a 3 foot 6 inch (1,067mm) gauge preserved railway line. Absolutely fantastic railway with wonderful scenery. The 5 mile (8 km) route runs between Grovane and Røyknes stations in Vennesla, 20 km north of Kristiansand on the coast.
Norway’s first preserved railway line opened 1964 after the line’s official closure in 1962.
This video was taken on the 13th August 2010 and it was such a memorable and fun trip, ending with a run-round footplate ride, that I have managed to resurrect the video from the old format and knock it into some sort of shape that you may enjoy.
A must to visit if ever in that part of the world !

    They did a good job raising the track above Beihølen dam. 35 years ago the train stopped at the dam, the roof of the engine just below the crown of the dam. There was no run-round then. Down towards Grovane, we stood on the footplate of the rear wagon with a hand brake, controlling the train. It's been a long time since I last rode the train.

      Dear @astoneuk, This is the very cleaver thing about this system. Having looked at everything for quite a while now, it appears that this is a cleaver mix of funicular, tramway and elevator technologies. It is such a fun trip to take as it is so odd a feeling when the little train carriage that you are travelling in enters a solid wall and then starts to go upwards. Extremely inventive engineering and a must to ride if you ever get the chance. Thanks for the comment. Very best wishes, WooWooMad.

Same thing in the opposite direction. It is included in the price of the Eurrail pass, Interrail pass, Swiss Travel Pass, Graubünden Pass and similar. Only seat reservation, mandatory, is not included. The Tirano railway station of the Rhaetian railway, although it is in Italy, is considered Swiss territory, therefore Swiss VAT applies to tickets, souvenirs etc. sold at the counter. Such a massive amount of work has already been done and they only deserve support and encouragement. I just had to use the small amount of video footage that I took to record my visit. The city at the top of the ride is just a fantastic example of a historic fortified city and I would recommend to anyone spending some money in the interesting shops therein. You are correct, at first I thought that the funicular was in a conventional style of "Balanced" working and it wasn't until later that I fully appreciated the independence of the two tracks after I had done some research. Originally it was made up of two sections, with a car change at San Nicola, where now there is doubling with Abt type switches used for crossings between the ascending carriage and the descending carriage. In the Corso Carbonara stop it can be seen how the tunnels were shaped to accommodate the track for doubling the downstream section. The name Righi comes from the famous Swiss Rigi (pronounced the same way), reached by the world's first cog railway.

      Dear @Luigi-uj5ml, Thank you again for contributing a knowledgeable and interesting comment on one of WooWooMad videos. I have only ridden two of the Genoa funicular and both are such an interesting trip to experience. If you have not seen it yet, do have a look at my video on the Ascensore Montegalletto Funicular Railway which is a "Transformer" design. That is, it changes into a elevator, (Lift), half way into its journey after being a funicular. If you have not been on this one, it is the one that is a must to be visited. This is an amazing piece of engineering. Thank you again. Very best wishes, WooWooMad.

      @@WooWooMad For the AMT (formerly the municipal transport company, now the mobility and transport company) of Genoa, only those of Sant'Anna and for the Righi are "funiculars". All other fixed installations are considered "lifts", including that of Monte Galletto and the inclined lift for Quezzi. The Principe - Granarolo rack, on the other hand, is considered by the Ministry of Transport to be a "railway", although it is similar to a two-cabin funicular (1200 mm gauge, central station with Abt-type switches for crossings, etc.). The only railway signal it is equipped with is the one that protects the Granarolo level crossing on the railway side. A horizontal and vertical elevator similar to that of Monte Galletto is that of the "Villa Scassi", but unfortunately, after spending millions of euros, it is once again stopped due to technical problems. An aerial funicular is in an advanced planning stage between the airport, the Genoa Sestri Ponente station and the Erzelli hill. A classic funicular has been activated after years of standstill in Celle Ligure

      @@WooWooMad Yes, I was born and live in Genoa. In the former gas works located in the "Gavette" locality (it was connected to the Genoa Brignole locomotive depot via an interesting non-electrified railway), where there is currently a bus depot, I had noticed one of the two carriages of the old funicular known as Sant'Anna, functioning as a water counterweight. Furthermore, in the entrance of the General Directorate of the AMT (ex UITE), in Via Montaldo 2, one of the motors that operated one of the two winches of the old funicular called del Righi in two sections was kept.

A bit of a shame but they have more room for the café and a little shop. But remember to pick a nice day as it is great up on top of the trams. Thanks for the comment. Very best wishes WooWooMad.

    Remember walking riding the old track bed whilst staying at Howstrake holiday camp just across the bay in the early 1960's when we used to come across from England for the old Manx Grand Prix in early September. Seem to remember that beyond the your buffer stops there were remnants of the old animal enclosures on a ledge cut into the cliff face. Howstrake was an internment camp in WW2, but long gone when I returned for a visit in 1980's. Your railway looks immaculate and the stock magnificent. I seem to remember reading that you were building a replica of 'Polar Bear' one of the original locos. Great video

    How the tracks changed in 1:37

    • @WooWooMad
      @WooWooMad Год назад

      Dear Rahul Doot, Ah! I understand what you are asking. There are two cabins that carry passengers and each one is dedicated to go their own way. One to the left, and one to the right. The passenger cabin that is built to go to the left only has a "H" flange wheel on the left side of the wheel axles so that the only direction that this cabin can go is to the left. The right cabin only has a "H" flange on the right side of the wheel axles so the only way that this cabin can go is to the right. The track doesn't change at all in the same way that normal railways work. In the video it is possible to see the cables that drive the cabin, one set for the left cabin and the other cables on the other side of the track that drive the right cabin. I hope that this explanation is understandable and explains everything. Very best wishes to you and your channel, WooWooMad.
